Who We Are

The Humanitarian “Nineveh Relief” Organization (HNRO) was founded by Nineveh IDPs in the immediate aftermath of the summer of 2014 to mitigate the effects of displacement and advocate for our community’s future. We are an independent, non-governmental, non-profit organization, which works to provide desperately needed humanitarian services to all people affected by the mass violence in Iraq, regardless of religious or ethnic identity. HNRO is officially registered in the KRI and in Baghdad.

HNRO is a trusted ally and competent advocate for forcibly displaced and all vulnerable people in Iraq, and has significant experience managing donor financed programs. We ran two medical clinics that each served over 600 IDPs a week with an annual budget of over $830,000 through grants from international organizations. We also established a medical center in Nineveh Plain for the returnees. We provide occupational training, music, English, and French courses; and, provided food aid to refugee camps. HNRO has also supported farmers with calf raising projects. Recently, HNRO started a Legal Clinic project to address issues of violations against minorities.

HNRO Implemented a Rubble Removal Project for the fully damaged houses in Qaraqosh, Karmles, and Bartella, with the support of ICRI, funded by USAID.  This project aims to help facilitate the rehabilitation process in Hamdaniya – Nineveh Plain, supporting the conditions needed for the safe and successful return to Ninewa Province.

Our staff is composed of locals (IDPs and returnees) and Americans from a range of ethnic and religious backgrounds. Using our diverse strengths and unique local expertise, we aim to expand HNRO’s services in response to the growing need among IDPs and returnees to their cities of origin in Nineveh Plain for access to food (through initiating agricultural and farming projects), education, employment and social-emotional rehabilitation.
